The function of clean bench

2025-05-09

A clean bench, also known as a laminar flow clean bench, is a workspace designed to maintain an ultra-clean environment by directing filtered air over the work surface to protect samples from contamination.

Primary Functions of a Clean Bench:

Protect Samples from Contamination:

HEPA-filtered air flows in a laminar (unidirectional) stream across the work area, preventing airborne particles from contaminating samples or equipment.

Provide a Sterile Work Area:

Ideal for tasks requiring a sterile environment such as microbiological testing, media preparation, or electronics assembly.

Minimize Cross-Contamination:

The continuous flow of filtered air flushes away contaminants introduced by users or materials.

Important Note:

Clean benches protect samples, but do not protect the user from hazardous materials. If working with biohazards, a biosafety cabinet (BSC) is required instead.
